This episode is titled, “The Ultimate Disciple”, and that description fits the bill. The master-student relationship gets most of the screen time this week while the fighting seems to take a break once again. Animation is still flawless, including an inspiring scene with Saitama putting down a meteor with finesse fit for an Armageddon re-make.

With all of his best efforts thwarted, it seems Genos has hit rock bottom. We get a few heartwarming thoughts of his master and of course the great Saitama comes to save the day. A ground breaking leap head first into danger and an easy one punch finish, and possibly the first one punch finish on an inanimate villain. Meteor explodes, saving the city, but what’s left after all the destruction? The entire city’s housing, a super market, and a brand new luxury car come out as the only casualties, but all the citizens survive (and to his dismay, Saitama’s old apartment structure he was evicted from happens to make it through just fine). As a result of his work, Saitama shoots straight to the 5th rank in the C Class, but this brings him some unwarranted attention from a few other heroes that are jealous of his quick ascension.  Tank Top Tiger brings out his aniki, Tank Top Black Hole, to challenge Saitama. Their plan is to turn the public opinion against him by putting him on blast, egging on an angry mob to defile his name and then when he’s at his worst, they’ll take him down and his glory along with it. Tank Top gets one punched, and Black Hole cries like a baby; however, the one’s getting the harshest punishment are the mob themselves.

A meteor is heading straight for Earth and Z City is right at the epicenter with imminent impact, and naturally, the Hero Association is already calling in the best of the best to take it down. Genos gets called in and learns the reality of the S Class heroes from the 3rd Rank S Class himself, Bang aka “Silver Fang”. During times of crisis, each situation is given a level: Tiger is crisis threatening massive loss of life, Demon is a crisis threatening to halt the functioning on an entire city or its entire destruction, Dragon is a crisis threatening multiple cities, and lastly, a God Level crisis threatens entire human extinction. Because of this particular “categorization” of crises, S Class heroes are able to decide whether or not a situation is a worthy quest of them to take, thus leaving Z City ready to be destroyed. Genos and Bang, along with the “Metal Knight”, Bofoi, fail to take down the meteor and ready themselves for destruction.

Saitama redirects his attention and goes into a rant. He never did care about what they had to say about him anyway, he never even did this for the people. His whole philosophy behind being a hero is that he does it “because he wants to”, but at the same time, we’ve seen him go through so much to gain adoration and approval. Amidst his emotional speech, Genos comes to put a finish to his monologue and gives his master his full approval. Even if the world is ready to see him as the hero he is, Genos will be there and will always support him.

This episode almost had me at tears; a genius at wit’s end with being misunderstood and a student truly aware of what his role is after seeing his master facing what is probably his biggest emotional torment. I think while the first half of this season, One Punch Man has been hilarious and action packed, but from here on out, they are bringing the feels.

ratings-a

Episode Rating:

A big turning point in this anime and hopefully we’ll see more emotionally driven episodes like this one.

counts-2

One-Punch Count:

Tank Top Tiger gets a one-punch knock out and the meteor gets a one-punch if that counts; however, I’m pretty sure crying like Tank Top Black Hole before you even get punched is worse.
