With the Oikura story line all wrapped up, Episode 7 kicks off the “Shinobu Mail” arc – and as with all new arcs, we get a new opening sequence! The artwork mimes that of the ending credits from the previous arc, a sort of crude, simplistic character design of what we come to assume is the infamous Kiss-Shot herself, Shinobu. Is it just me or does this opening sequence remind anybody of Deemo?

The “Shinobu Mail” arc swings us behind two months before the “Sodachi Riddle” arc. With a lot of the tension released after the first arc, this one gets back into the Monogatari witty banter and sexually driven dialogue – and that’s what a big chunk of this episode was about. We get a lot of screen time with Kanbaru, even if most it is sexual innuendoes and propositioning her body for her senpai. Their back and forth take place in the now burned down abandoned cram school that Oshino Meme once called “home”. I personally love these bits of the Monogatari style, especially with a few of the pop culture references, quick takes, and ironic dialogue.

The second half of the episode saw some action with the sudden appearance of a ghostly body of armor that seemed to be moving on its own. Kanbaru tries to protect Araragi over and over, but with each strike we learn that the samurai armor was using an “energy drain” to sap the power out of Kanbaru. Unfortunately, this was one of the more poorly animated fight scenes in Monogatari. The armor didn’t seem to “come to life” in a way, it was a bit clunky in the fight and it was just an awkwardly shot fight, in my opinion. Also, compared to the previous series, the fight scenes were always animated beautifully – for those of you who remember most of the fight between Neko Hanekawa and Shinobu.

Episode Rating:

Quick, witty, and enjoyable dialogue in the first scene; however, the fighting sequence left me wanting more.

Head-Tilt Count:

Lots of quick cuts in this episode, and just as many head-tilts; see above for my favorite looping head-tilt.
